The Transformative Power of Community Spaces

“When we present ourselves to the world as smooth and seamless, we allow each other no way in, no way into life together. But as we acknowledge and affirm that the cross is the shape of our lives, we open a space within us where community can occur. And in that empty space, in that solitude at the center of the cross, the One who created us whole makes us whole again.”

Parker Palmer

What does community mean to you? A community can be small or large. It can be made up of family, friends, church groups, or acquaintances with common interests. You can be part of one community or many. There may be communities you remember fondly from your past.

I've encountered all these examples, but my most significant community experience came in college when I was part of St. Michael's Campus Ministry in Auburn, Alabama. In some ways, it felt like the island of misfits. Everyone was so different but yearned to find a place of belonging amidst a large college campus. This community embodied Christ's love as described in 1 Corinthians 12:12-27, "We are many parts, but we are all one body." We were open and vulnerable with one another, and the masks college students typically wore were removed. It was a beautiful collection of diverse individuals coming together to connect and make each other whole.

The cross pictured above, along with the following quote, was given to my husband and me as a wedding gift from our dear friend, Sister Sharon, whom we met at St. Michael's. In my experience, the following passage from Parker Palmer conveys the truest meaning of community.

The Promise of Paradox by Parker Palmer:

When I think about the people with whom I have the deepest sense of community, I think of people who have been able to share their contradictions, their brokenness - thus allowing me to share mine. When we present ourselves to the world as smooth and seamless, we allow each other no way in, no way into life together. But as we acknowledge and affirm that the cross is the shape of our lives, we open a space within us where community can occur. And in that empty space, in that solitude at the center of the cross, the One who created us whole makes us whole again. And that is reason for affirmation, cause for joy!

I am deeply grateful for the communities that have shaped my life. So, during this month of giving thanks, I would like to name a few.

  • My Family of Five ❤️

  • Growing Up, My Mother's Prayer Group

  • Young Life

  • Women In The Word

  • The Chapmans, Obriens, and Crums

  • Biz, Shannon, Sheila (Childhood Friends)

  • 90-Day Direction

  • Peace Seekers

  • Survivors To Thrivers

  • Tim and Kelley

  • The Auburn Family

What communities have shaped your life? Consider listing these communities and offering gratitude. Reach out and say thank you! And if you find yourself seeking community, go! Look for them. Communities are all around. Even online. Don't give up searching

I love the Ted Talk, You're Not Alone in Your Loneliness, by Jonny Sun, about online communities. Social media or online groups can get a bad rap, but Sun's depiction of how they can create community is on point. For example, during COVID, I made new friends online through two communities, Peace Seekers and Hope Writers. Crazy. I would never have imagined, but it opened up a new world I didn't know existed, and I am so grateful.

One last thing! I want to share a new online community called The Gathering Place. My coach and friend, Makeda Pennycooke, created this online space to navigate the messy middle of life. Let me tell you; she is full of wisdom! I have no doubt this will be a community of insight and connection. Best of all, it's FREE!! Doors will be opening this month! Prayer for November:

Dear God,

Thank you for the communities that have shaped my life. I am grateful for the times I was able to let down my guard and connect with others. It wasn't always easy. There were many times I felt lonely and searched for connection. May you provide a safe space of belonging, acceptance, and community for all. Let us be made whole in you through one another. Amen.
